Mortal Kombat 2021 Unveils First Images of Cast
Over a year ago we did a little Mortal Kombat Who's Who article, to give us some information on the cast and who they are playing or could be playing. Well there's been some new released images of the cast on set as well as news on more actors joining Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat film. Lets check it out.
Here we have Chinese Canadian Ludi Lin as the people's champion Liu Kang with his best friend Kung Lao portrayed by German-Chinese martial arts actor Max Huang. We previously believed that Eurasian American Martial Arts actor Lewis Tan was initially cast as Kung Lao as Tan had previously played Lao's cousin Kung Jin in Mortal Kombat X Generations. But this is not the case.
Here we have a close up of what appears to be Indonesian Chinese actor Joe Taslim as Bi-Han aka Sub-Zero. Many fans are anticipating that he will become Noob Saibot in this film or it's sequel much like his games counterpart so his younger brother Kuai-Liang can take the mantle of Subzero. As of now we have no word on who will be portraying Kuai-Liang if he even shows up for this film.
Next up we have Joe Taslim's Bi-Han stabbing Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi aka Scorpion. This is likely the iconic event that sparks the feud between Scorpion and the Subzero brothers that the game is infamous for.
Here we have Mehcad Brooks channeling his inner Carl Weathers with that manly moustache as Officer Jackson "Jax" Briggs. While we can't quite tell what is happening in this image, it seems to be Jax is fighting with a much larger character. Our best guess it is Shao Kahn judging by what Mehcad is pushing with them BIONIC ARMS. It looks like it could be Shao Kahn's war hammer and if we had to take a guess at who is playing the Kahn. We would say 7" tall Australian wrestler Nathan Jones is the likely candidate. Jones is confirmed to be part of the cast, fans speculating he will be Kahn or the Four Armed Shokan Goro in the film.
Street! Is that an Australian playing an Aussie? for real? Yes despite Kano being portrayed as Japanese American in the original games, British White by Trevor Goddard in the 1995 film, British Asian by Darren Shahlavi in the Web Series Mortal Kombat Legacy and now finally he is portrayed by an Australian actor Josh Lawson. Finally an Aussie just like he is in the modern games no fake accent here.
Another Australian in the cast is Jessica McNamee as American Special Forces soldier Sonya Blade. Here we see her pinning down her arch enemy Kano. No surprises there then, these two are always at it.
Finally we have our last photo. Lewis Tan as.... Cole Young? Wait, Who? Well according to Entertainment Weekly, The Eurasian American Martial Arts actor will be playing an original character.... oh no. Please don't be like Milla Jovovich as Alice in the Resident Evil film. Well according to what we can find on Cole Young is what Tan has to say:
"When we first meet Cole, he's in a really bad spot," Tan says. "He's down on his luck. He's kind of a washed-up MMA fighter who used to be a champion, who used to believe in himself, who used to have a lot of hope in his career. And it's all gone down the drain. It's a very interesting place for a hero to start, and I think that, along the journey of Mortal Kombat and Cole discovering where he comes from, you're introduced to all these other iconic characters and elements that everybody loves so dearly."
Cole knows nothing of his heritage aside from the mysterious birthmark on his chest — in the shape of the Mortal Kombat symbol. Tan remains mum on how this birthmark connects to the character's origins but agrees "it's a unique symbol" that "will eventually tie into the journey that he's going on." It remains the only clue Cole has when the sinister sorcerer and emperor of the realm Outerworld, Shang Tsung (Skyscraper's Chin Han), sends Sub-Zero, now with his cryomancy powers, to hunt him down.
Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs (Supergirl's Mehcad Brooks), a special forces major who bears the same mark as Cole, urges him to seek out Sonya Blade (The Meg's Jessica McNamee). She ferries him onward to the next leg of the journey, to the thunderous Elder God known as Lord Raiden (Thor's Tadanobu Asano), who grants sanctuary at his temple to all those with the mark. There, Cole encounters even more recognizable characters from the Mortal Kombatgames — Liu Kang (Power Rangers' Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (actor and stuntman Max Huang), and Kano (Superstore's Josh Lawson) — as they all train for a high-stakes tournament to defeat the invading enemies from Outerworld.
While it sounds like Cole maybe a reimagination of Johnny Cage other fans had speculated Tan would have been Kuai-Liang (Tunder/Sub-Zero II) or the blind swordsman Kenshi or even the Cyber Ninja Sektor. However we think we have figured out exactly who Lewis Tan will be if Cole Young is truly based off a character from the Mortal Kombat lore. Wanna know who Cole Young really is? Tremor.
So hear us out. Cole Young is played by Lewis Tan who claimed on his deleted instagram caption: "2021 we change the game, and I got the perfect mask to wear" Hmm interesting choice of words Tan. He could be talking about the obligatory face masks due to the pandemic, but what if he is talking about a character who wears a mask? that doesn't exactly eliminate many characters. Ermac, Rain, Reptile all wear masks too. But why Tremor? Well Tremor's real name is never revealed in the Mortal Kombat games so he could easily be Cole Young. We also don't know what fighting style he uses. Lewis Tan himself seems to be mostly focusing on Muay Thai as indicated by the wraps on his fists. This is much like how Tremor coats his fists with stone, magma, crystals or metallic ores. He also claimed he would be using Judo and Jujutsu as well which matches how Tremor also loves to grapple in the MKX game. On top of that Tremor is one of the tallest Mortal Kombat characters (the tallest "Ninja" character and Earthrealmer) and Lewis Tan is at least 6'1" making him one of the tallest in the cast. Finally there's the Mask. Tan's deleted comment about the mask could be hinting at is character's true Identity and it should be noticed that Tremor's torso in the games is typically armoured by stone which could hide the apparent dragon tattoo that Cole Young has. Tremor is also a member of Kano's Black Dragon alongside Kabal (who will be portrayed by New Zealander Daniel Nelson) and the film can explore how this washed up former MMA champ will descend into the villain we know today. Another interesting note is the Entertainment Weekly article claims Shang Tsung will give Bi-Han is Cryomancer powers instead of them being natural to him, maybe Shang Tsung could be the reason Cole Young ends up with Tremor's power set.
So far the rest of the confirmed cast include Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Thai Australian Mel Jarson is rumoured to be Kitana, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Elissa Cadwell as Nitara and Nathan Jones rumoured to be Shao Kahn or Goro. While we have no word on who else will be in the film but many fans are expecting at least an appearance or mention of Kuai-Liang and the rest of the Lin Kuei, Johnny Cage as well as some Edenians like Jade, Tanya and Rain. Now we have a few ideas on who they could have for these characters, but as of now we will just have to sit and wait to see what the future has in store for the Mortal Kombat film.
