Director Niki Caro Talks About 'Mushu' in Disney's 'Mulan'
Updated: Apr 2
"I think we can all appreciate that Mushu is irreplaceable"
We were invited by Disney Studios UK & Media Hive to watch an exclusive preview of Disney's Mulan, followed by a Q&A with Whale Rider director Niki Caro.
We were introduced to 3 clips/scenes of the movie, which we cannot give away details on (for obvious spoiler reasons) but we CAN give you our reaction & some info given by Niki Caro herself.
BUT JUST INCASE YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO EVEN THE SMALLEST DETAILS, HERE'S A SPOILER ALERT NOW! PLEASE READ ANOTHER ONE OF OUR POSTS!
It was emotional, thrilling, visually captivating & very characteristically orchestrated.
We knew the movie would be emotional from the snippets in the more recent trailer and the epic rendition of the original musical soundtrack of the animated movie, but we didn't expect to be drawn in within the first 5 seconds of the 1st scene we were shown.
There's definitely a lot of traditional Chinese Kung Fu movie influence in the action, as Niki Caro said she watched and gained inspiration from 'Hero' (2004) so if you're a fan of old Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh or Donny Yen movies you'll definitely be satisfied. We've never seen Disney display full on Martial Arts scenes like this, not even in any Marvel movies, what's more interesting is that Liu Yifei does all her own stunts & Martial Arts, as well as many of the other cast of course. Niki Caro revealed that in this live action version, Mulan has a special spiritual 'Chi' energy that separates her from everyone else. Which, as Niki Caro explained, is at it's highest when she is being herself. Quite poetic if you ask us!
Niki Caro also explained that it took her 1 year, auditions after auditions to find for the perfect actress for Mulan.
After a world wide search, fate lead Disney back to Liu Yifei after she wasn't immediately available the first time.
Niki Caro was asked about the level of production and revealed that there were a total of 5 cameras on set for one of the scenes we were shown, which can give you a really good idea about the grand level of lengths that have gone into production of this movie.
When asked about the soundtrack and it not being a musical like the animated version, Niki Caro jokingly said 'you wouldn't break out into a song in the middle of a war' (lol) but promised that the classical songs from the animated movie will be honoured in this live action version. But didn't reveal how!
Lastly, we had to personally ask Niki Caro about our beloved Mushu and if there would be a version or something in the movie to honour him, while everyone in the cinema room laughed at the question here's what she had to say:
"I think we can all appreciate that Mushu is irreplaceable, and the animated classic stands on its own in that regard. In this movie there is a creature / spiritual representation of the ancestors and most particularly Mulan's relationship with her father. But an update of Mushu, no."
As heartbreaking as this may sound for fans not being able to hear the famous lines "Dishonour on you! Dishonour on your cow!", we can tell you now that after watching the exclusive previews we don't think it's a big miss. Take it from us, this live action version will blow you away and create history.
