Eastender's Upcoming Sikh Family
Updated: Oct 29
It has been announced that Eastenders will be introducing a new family. The Panesars. What has been is that this new family are Punjabi Sikhs. This is one of the few times in media you will see a fictional representation of such a family or culture but that is an article for another day. Lets see who the new family members are and the actors portraying them. The family is so far consisting of three brothers but will hopefully expand beyond that.
Character: Kheerat Panesar
What we know: Eldest of the three brothers. Described as a Charismatic bussiness man who knows what he wants and how to get it. Determined, Persuasive and Confident. His lifestyle has him both envied and idolised by his younger brothers. Judging by the photo, Kheerat is a more openly practising Sikh following the practice of Kesh as he is bearded and wearing a Dastar (Turban).
Actor: Jaz Deol
What we know: Jaz Deol is a 30 year old British Indian actor and much like his character, he comes from a Punjabi Sikh background. Jaz (short of Jaskiranjit) started off acting through many theatre roles: Mush & Me (Bush/Edinburgh Fringe Festival/Camden Peoples); Speed (Kali); Harlesden High Street (Tara Arts/Jackdaw); Snookered (Tamasha); Snow Queen (International tour); Ruffled (503); King Lear (Young Vic). Through Snookered he found his new american agent and would further his resume to roles like Duleep Singh in Viceroy's House (starring Dumbledore actor Michael Gabon), Rajah in Boy with the TopKnot (portraying the Older brother of Sacha Dhawans character) and even did motion capture and voice acting for Jayadeep Mir/Henry Green in Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Fluent in Hindi and Punjabi, standing at 6'1" tall and skilled in Bhangra Dance, Karate and Aikido. He is one to look out for in the upcoming Eastenders family and hopefully in more roles in future.
Character: Jags Panesar
What we know: Jags is described as living in his brother Kheerat's shadow. He has best intentions but regardless of his try hard efforts. Thing do not go well for him and his family are constantly unimpressed by him.
Actor: Amar Adatia
What we know: Amar Adatia is a 33 year old British Indian actor and producer. He has been acting since he was 14 with his first role as a bakcground shopkeeper in Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham (yes thats right). While at the time, there was not a lot of auditions or roles for an actor of his background and this lead to Amar going into producing and even starting his own company: https://www.amarich.co.uk/ .
To date, Amar has now produced six movies, four of which got world wide releases in 2017, Four Hours, Gangsters Gamblers Geezers, Requiem, Dangerous Game.
Dead Ringer came out in 2018 and now The Seven is due out in 2019. His acting credits include Jaigan Kamala in Dead Ringer, Adam Chopra in Dangerous Game, Krish in Gangsters, Gamblers and Geezers and Kyber in Retribution. Interestingly, Amar's films are usually revolving around London Gangster and crime storyline. Can we expect this with Jags getting involved into that for Eastenders?
Character: Vinny Panesar
What we know: The alledged Golden Boy of the brothers. Sweet and Bright. But be warned as people shouldn't be fooled by his innocent exterior. He is no angel and trouble is usually close by.
Actor: Shiv Jalota
What we know: Primaryly a stage actor. Shiv Jalota is a 25 year old British Indian actor. His experience mostly comes from stage acting, he is noted to be the first British Asian actor to play Christopher Boone in the play: "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time". What is interesting about this young actor is that his talents from his stage experience could mean a possible feature film role (maybe if they do Street Dance 3 featuring Bhangra street dance fusion?). Shiv Jalota maybe a pintsized 5'4", but dont underestimate him, as there are big things inside this small package such as his skills as a beatboxer, dancer (body popping, street dance, Hiphop and Freestyle). On top of this he has many physical talents as he has acheived an APC basic Group fighting, stage combat and trains in Capoeira as indicated by his spotlight profile.
Are you excited to see the 3 brothers in Walford? Let us know!
