Disney's Mulan is Heading For a Sequel

Updated: Oct 30, 2020

Considering the movie got delayed (luckily we were able to see it before the lockdown), it's up for a sequel according to Full Circle Cinema, Disney is confident about it!

Mulan 2 in the original animated film features Mulan and her fiance Shang being requested by the emperor to guard his three daughters, princesses Ting-Ting, Mei and Su as they travel to meet and marry three other princes to form an alliance with the kingdom of Qui Gong. The alliance is believed to help make China stronger to defend against more Mongolian invaders who are still around as bandits and insurgents in China during the second film. Joining the couple are the comedy trio lean and lanky funny guy Ling, short and muscular tough guy Yao and fat gentle giant Chien Po are brought along to protect the princesses as well.

Mushu aint happy about being excluded

It is likely that a Mulan 2 sequel in live action may play out as a completely different story due to one major thing missing from the first live action film: Mushu the dragon. It was confirmed that Mushu the Dragon was excluded from the live action film due to China allegedly having a negative reception to the character and also the fact that the Live Action Mulan wanted to go for a more realistic feel (just ignore the evil shape-shifting witch they added). But the lack of Mushu means one thing for the sequel. What drives the plot will be gone. In Mulan 2, Mushu is worried that he will no longer be the Hua/Fa families animated guardian and have to return to be an inanimate object if Shang married into the family, as Shang's family guardian (whoever that would have been) would take the responsibility and thus making Mushu redundant. So throughout the second films Mushu tries to break the two up.

director Niki Caro

It is likely that the Mulan 2 live action film will pull an original idea based off one of the events of the original Ballad of Mulan and a story that has not yet been covered by Disney yet. It is possible the Laotong (Sworn Sister) and the Sui Tang Romance story will be adapted for a Mulan 2 story to accommodate Mushu's absence. It is currently unknown if Director Niki Caro will return to direct but Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner are set to return as Producers.
