Attack the Block 2: Joe Cornish and John Boyega Talking Ideas for a Sequel
Before his fame in rose across the pond in a galaxy far far away, John Boyega was known to UK audiences for his lead role in Joe Cornish's Sci-Fi Thriller "Attack the Block." The film starred Boyega in the lead role as Moses a teenager from South London who alongside his friends are forced to hide in their tower block during Bonfire Night after they unwittingly attract the wrath of multiple "blacker than black" furred glowing fanged Wildmutt looking aliens who fancy the mandem for dinner.
In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, John Boyega was one of several British celebrities that joined in the protest during in London. He poured his heart out over his passionate speech regarding his feelings about BLM and his experiences. This had lead to many of his fans and supporters to celebrate Boyega by re-watching his first leading role in Attack the Block, which made him a household name for many in the UK.
"The movie's nearly ten years old now, and it's trying to address issues that were fairly ingrained then, and have certainly stuck around," Cornish says. "At the time when it came out, it put a lot of people's backs up, because it has a very unusual protagonist and arc." He adds: "It's wonderful that people are revisiting the film [...] Most of all, it's a moment for John, and it's a moment for hopefully some social change. To be a tiny little part of something that I hope is much, much bigger is exciting."
John Boyega's speech during the BLM protest had a strong kick when the actor stated "I don't know if I will have a career after this". Take a look at speech.
"We've got ideas," Cornish said of a potential sequel on the Script Apart podcast. "I met with John a couple of months ago to talk about it. We've always had ideas after the first one. But obviously we've both been busy doing different things." With the first film nearly a decade old now, Cornish hints that a sequel would take into account how much things have changed – or perhaps not – in the intervening years. "In a way, the longer you leave it, the more interesting it is," he explains. "So that's all I'll say."
What we can speculate at most is that John Boyega will return as the lead role of Moses who will be released from police custody following the events that transpired. It is possible that this point in regards to Boyega's age that 10 years have passed since events of the last film and Moses will now be a grown up living in a tower block. Returning cast can potentially include current Doctor Who actress Jodie Whitaker who portrayed Samantha Adams, a medical student from the same black that unites with Moses and his friends to survive the alien attack. Other survivors who could return included Pest, Brewer, Biggz, Ron, Tia and Dimples portrayed by Alex Esmail, Luke Treadaway, Simon Howard, Nick Frost, Page Meade and Danielle Vitalis.
